Alastair Sawday's

Just about impossible to fault this big, elegant mansion with lovely, half-kept garden and pond (unfenced), games
room with drums, and excellent meals. Quite often Andrew cooks on the grand open fire...

We drove straight past Les Fontaines when we first reached it, not daring to believe our luck. Set behind wrought-iron gates in a quiet corner of the Norman village of Barbery, it's an 18th-century mini chateau with tall, shuttered windows overlooking palm trees and topiary bushes in the front drive, and a charmingly dishevelled garden to the rear.
Inside, it is light and airy and furnished by the welcoming English/Australian owners in elegant but unstuffy style. Bedrooms are not ritzy, but comfortable (all have en-suite bathrooms), and older children enjoy the games room with snooker table, videos and books. Our breakfast included home-made muesli, jams from Bayeux market and excellent coffee; dinner in the oak-panelled dining room was remarkably good value.
